BRIDAL BEAUTY | Bridal Party Looks
Many times when I’m working with a bride and her bridal party, I’ll get asked what the ‘best look’ for the bridesmaids is. The truth is there doesn’t necessarily have to be one uniform look for bridesmaids! In fact, using the same colours across all your bridesmaids can be dated and unflattering to each of their individual looks (unless of course your end goal is to have a bridal party of clones!). Just as the technique of application should be customized to the individual look of a client, the colours used should also be specifically chosen.
The make-up colours of choice will vary depending on the desired look and the colour of the bridesmaids dresses…but a failsafe go-t0 look that always works well on camera includes neutral tones on the eyes, pink on the cheeks/lips..and of course, false lashes!!
For brides looking for a little more direction with their bridal party make-up, one very minor suggestion (and I say ‘minor’ because it’s really not that big a deal for all bridesmaids to have the exact same look!) is for ‘bridesmaids’ to keep the intensity (and area of intensity) of the make-up application consistent. For instance, if your bridesmaids are gonna rock a smoky eye + neutral pink lip combination, make sure the entire party goes for a similar level of intensity on the eyes rather than on the lips. In the group shots, that bridesmaid that opts to focus on reeeally dramatic smoky eyes or who instead pairs the look with a punchy red lip may look like the odd man (well, bridesmaid!) out!! But again, I reiterate it’s really not that big a deal…because the focus in the pics is always the bride anyway!!
Personally, I have to admit that as a make-up artist, I absolutely love when the bride is open to whatever looks her bridesmaids want – I always get excited to play around with more colours rather than my usual neutral palette of browns, nudes, pinks and purples! …and really at the end of the day, each bridesmaid gets to choose a look that helps her look and feel her best….and happy people always make for the best picture opps, no?! :)
Lastly, if your bridesmaids are going to do their own make-up, make sure that they apply their make-up with enough intensity to stand out on camera….or you can always hire a professional make-up artist (ahem!) to help out with that. :)
Check out these before and afters from Jess‘ wedding…her bridesmaids got to rock looks all their own! My fave was Aneta’s double drama eye + lip combo (pictured below).

BEAUTY 101 | Applying Cream Blush

Cream blush is one of those products that I don’t know why I didn’t add to my daily routine sooner! Perhaps it’s an improvement in my own application technique, or a change in the product’s formulations…either way today’s latest cream blushes are way more user-friendly and most importantly, they look sooo gorgeous on! Once applied, cream blush leaves the cheeks with a beautiful glow that looks seamless…and well, just natural. Love!!
Cream blush is the perfect option for summertime for when the weather becomes too warm and fussy for a face full of powder. Applying cream blush is easy – try these tips for a natural flush:
- Apply your primer + foundation (or tinted moisturizer) first to create a balanced canvas.
If you don’t use foundation, use oil blotting papers to remove any excess oil from the skin – this will help the cream blush to glide on smoothly and evenly. - Don’t powder just yet!
Cream blush should go on before any powder to avoid a ‘cakey’ look. Save that light dusting of translucent powder for the final step! - To control the amount of cream blush you use, first set aside what you need.
Pump some cream blush on the back of your hand if from a pump dispenser or use a spatula to remove a small amount of the product if from a jar/container. (Bonus! Doing so will help to keep your product as sanitary as possible). - Use a brush (1) or your fingers (3) to apply the cream blush.
I find that using a brush consistently produces the best results (try MAC brushes in 131, 188 or Make-up Forever’s Blush Brush #55N). - Use a small circular motion to apply the cream blush.
Start at the apples of the cheeks and move diagonally upwards, using the cheekbone as a guideline (2). Essentially, apply it similar to how you would apply your powder blush! …and of course, blend!! - Heavy-handed?
If you apply too much (it happens!), use your fingers to blend it out (3) or use a clean sponge (4) to blend away the excess.

BEAUTY 101 | Make-up for Headshots
WCH Women by Claudia HungMake-up by Rhia Amio
I’ll be working with my friend triple threat Tina (that’s a lot of T’s!) tomorrow doing her make-up for a photoshoot. The photoshoot is for headshots for promotional use and for Tina’s website. In preparation for tomorrow’s shoot, we’ve been chatting back and forth on what the look should be. In that sense, make-up for headshots is very similar to bridal make-up – you want a natural and classic look, that still looks like you, but essentially your best-you. If a casting director decides to call you in, he/she will expect you to look as your headshot portrays you.
Here are some make-up tips to help get you picture perfect for that headshot (or even just as an easy everyday look!):
1. Groomed brows.
The power of a good brow should never be underestimated! A well-defined and well-kept brow frames the face, makes it look slimmer and also means you don’t have to wear as much eyeliner! Eyebrows that are too thin can make you look aged, while brows that are too thick can be distracting from your best features. Finding that happy medium? See this post for some brow-know-how.
2. Even out skin tone with foundation and concealer.
A photograph can tend to highlight and saturate any uneven tones in the skin (i.e. undereye circles, redness, etc.). For undereye circles, use a peach or a pink based concealer to lift the dark tone and then top it off with your skin tone matching concealer to blend it with the skin.
3. Set with powder and touch-up.
Set your foundation and concealer with powder to help keep it in place. Be prepared to powder the T-zone in case it gets shiny under hot studio lights.
4. Contour the cheekbones with a darker shaded powder and apply a peachy-pink blush for a healthy glow.
Use a contouring powder (or a shade of matte powder that’s 2-3 shades darker than your skin tone) and apply it just under the cheekbone to define the face. Blend well. Finish the cheeks off with some blush: a little blush adds contrast and helps to make sure you don’t look washed out in the finished photo. With blush, avoid shimmer textures and also blend well (blending…that’s key!).
5. Avoid heavy eyeliner and eyeshadow.
Heavy eye make-up can look dated, but ultimately it draws attention away from the overall picture and what should be the focus of the shot (you!). With heavy eye make-up, suddenly your photo can become ‘look at this nice make-up’ rather than ‘look at this pretty face’. To avoid being overpowered by eyeliner, keep any eyeliner thin and tight to the eye. You can even skip lining altogether, and instead simply push the eyeliner into the base of the lashes to define the lashline and make the lashes appear fuller. Use eyeshadow colours that closely match your skin tone and definitely avoid shimmery/frosty textures. Curl your eyelashes and apply two coats of mascara.
6. Keep the lips neutral and avoid colours that are too ‘unnatural’ looking.
A safe shade is always no more than 2 shades darker than your own colour. Apply your lip colour and add a hint of lip gloss to add dimension and a healthy shine to the lips.
Now, all you have to do is smile…because that’s always gorgeous! :)

BEAUTY 101 | Beauty Prescription for a Hang-over

Just in case you go a little overboard with the alcohol consumption this evening (it is New Year’s after all!), here are a few quick make-up tips to help you nurse (and conceal) tomorrow’s hang-over!
1. Moisturize!
If you didn’t get the chance to do so the night (or early morning!) before, make sure you thoroughly cleanse the skin and remove any leftover make-up. Hydrate the skin by applying moisturizer, as alcohol dehydrates the body. Don’t forget the lips – apply some lip balm to soften them for your lip application later.
2. Say bye to post-party eyes.
Use some eye drops to lessen any redness in the eyes, and an eye cream to help tone down any under-eye puffiness.
Concealer will make all the difference for telltale signs of a late party night (i.e. darkened undereye circles!). Use a peachy-pink concealer to brighten any dark undereye circles, and follow with your skin tone matching concealer to blend it all in.
Avoid eyeshadow colours that are red-based (like purple, mahogany and certain browns). Red-based tones tend to enhance any redness in sleep-deprived eyes. Instead, opt for a black or even a dark blue eyeliner to contrast the whites of the eyes, making them appear brighter. Top the eyes off by curling the lashes and adding 2 coats of mascara for a wide-eyed look.
3. Get (well, fake) glowing skin!
Apply bronzer in this prescribed 3-shape motion to build-up an even glow and bring life back to post-party dull and dehydrated skin. Smile and add some blush to the cheeks – this will help you look awake…even though you may not feel so awake right away!
4. Shine on with gloss.
As the finishing touch, apply a moisturizing gloss in a peachy-pink colour and you’ll be ready for a new day…AND a new year!
HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!!! See you in 2010 :) -Rhia

BEAUTY 101 | Lip Tips – Homemade Remedies for Winter
A perfect pout always starts with smooth and moisturized lips…but with winter now officially upon us, a little more effort is necessary to get the lips soft and supple! The weather and environment around us tend to be overly dry in winter and that can instantly zap our lips of much-needed moisture.
Fortunately, there are many simple at-home remedies to keep lips looking their best! Other than a good lip balm, a key step to a perfect pout is exfoliating the lips to eliminate any dead skin cells. Try these exfoliating tips you can easily do at home to keep your lips soft and supple all year round:
1. Start off with clean lips. Use a make-up remover and tissue to gently clean the lips. (Always try to use a wet cloth or tissue when removing product off the lips. The product will come off easier if the tissue is soaked, and won’t drag the skin on the lips and encourage dryness and irritation).
2. Add two teaspoons of sugar to a couple of teaspoons of either olive oil or honey. Mix the ingredients thoroughly until it reaches a paste-like consistency. Dab the homemade remedy on the lips and let it sit for about 1-2 minutes to soak in.
3. After a couple of minutes, use either your finger, a spare toothbrush or a wet washcloth to gently glide the exfoliating mixture back and forth across the lips. This acts as a scrub and will help to get rid of any dead skin cells so that smooth, supple lips can resurface!
4. Rinse well and apply a lip balm to hydrate the lips. (Apply a lip balm throughout the day as needed).
The homemade lip scrub is great to do at night so that in the morning, you’ll wake up with perfect and kissable lips (please note: homemade lip scrub will result in soft lips, but does not necessarily eliminate morning breath). :)
You’ll find that once you exfoliate your lips, your lipstick and lipgloss will glide on much smoother and last longer. Bonus – even those fine ‘experience’ lines of the lips will be less accentuated!
With the holiday season and the advent of festive red lips upon us, I certainly hope you find these tips helfpul!
