GET THE LOOK | Blue Eyeliner for Spring Summer 2013

Get the Look | How to Wear Blue Eye Make-up for Spring Summer 2013 by Rhia Amio artistrhi Toronto Make-up Artist

The SS2013 runways were filled with all kinds of blue make-up, fifty shades of blue, if you will. Now, most blue-themed make-up looks don’t really translate to everyday life that well…but this is one blue eyeliner look that does not require either being a teenager or Nicki Minaj to pull off!  The key is in its subtle application…and of course, these five helpful products:

1. Make-up Forever Aqua Eyes in Turquoise
Line the inner bottom rim of the eye with a turquoise liner like Make-up Forever Aqua Eyes in Turquoise.  I’ve tried many a ‘waterproof’ eyeliner, and Aqua Eyes definitely lives up to the claim, even against my challenging watery/oily/you-name-it(!) eyes.

Note:  For Stella McCartney’s SS2013 show (picture above), make-up maestro Pat McGrath used CoverGirl Queen Collection Vivid Impact Eyeliner in Jade to get the look.

2. Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil
Defined brows are a prerequisite for any professional make-up look. Maybelline’s Define-A-Brow pencil has a tiny-nib that gives you full control over how you draw your brows.  The texture of the pencil is neither too waxy either, so the result is naturally defined brows. For tips on how to fill brows in, see this post on the Power of Good Brows.

3. Stila 14K eyeshadow
The inner corner of the eye was accented with a yellow gold, a perfect complimentary colour to the turquoise blue liner. Stila 14K’s eyeshadow has a seeerious amount of pigment, so only a touch of this is needed.

4. Tweezerman Classic Lash Curler
Everybody touts the power of the Shu Uemara lash curler, and while I won’t deny its status as a beauty staple standard, I do find the Tweezerman Classic Lash Curler just as effective on my straight downward-growing lashes…and at nearly half the cost – well, sign me up! Whatever curler you prefer, other than the blue liner, this look involves minimal eyeliner…which means mascara application is a must, and curling the lashes prior to mascara application is a pre-must! Curlers, ready!

5. Maybelline Volum’Express Rocket Mascara
Now that our pretty lashes are curled, it’s time to amp them up with a serious dose of mascara. The quickest way to do it – the aptly named Maybelline’s Volum’Express Rocket Mascara. Your lashes will have a serious blast-off towards volume with just a couple of coats of Rocket Mascara. The large brush with short bristles really distributes and coats each lash with a maximum amount of mascara. Work fast with this mascara:  do your coats quick and back-to-back, avoiding time for drying in between coats (that can lead to potential clumping!).

The best thing about this look is that you have to get up, close and personal to see it. It’s like a ‘no make-up make-up’ look…but with a brightening blue liner kick! That makes it the perfect kind of make-up – one that draws attention to you and not to itself first!  Now, that’s a trend I can get on board with.

Welcome to my journal and journey as a make-up and hair artist with all the beautiful people and products I encounter along the way.
