PRODUCT REVIEW | MAC Dazzleglass and Rose Romance Collections

macaprilcollections

This past April was another lovely month for new MAC Collections. The aptly named Dazzleglass collection is a brilliantly sparkling set of glosses and mascaras. Both the glosses and mascara have finely-milled specks of glitter that catch the light beautifully and give that perfect lighter touch for spring make-up. The sheer glosses can be worn on their own for a glossy sparkle, or can be layered over your favourite lipstick for a different look [try Moth to a Flame (a sparkling pearly pink) or Goldylocks (a high voltage gold shimmer gloss)] pictured below . I love that the Dazzleglass formula isn’t overly sticky, as past MAC glosses. Stock up on these while they are available, as they are limited edition! The ad campaign for a second collection, Rose Romance, completely drew me; I just had to see what the collection was about from looking at the promo items! The collection features a few limited edition items and permanent staples to the MAC line-up. The colours of the collection are more subtle (think romantic), which are perfectly in tune with the lighter make-up routines we turn to for the warmer seasons ahead.

Fix+ Rose!
Delightfully, the Rose Romance colllection also comes with a new variation on my beloved Fix+ (a post-make-up moisturizer and setter that adds the perfect glisten to your application. I’m a huge fan!). Fix+ Rose is infused with all the good-for-your-skin stuff as the original formula, but also comes with the refreshing scent of rosewater. The rosewater scent has calming effects on the psyche and on your skin. It’s the perfect finishing touch and treat to your own make-up application or that of your client!

PRODUCT REVIEW | Review of Drugstore Mega Mascaras

Since mascara should be replaced every 3 months (or as soon as it starts smelling funky!), I always like to use this time as an opportunity to try something new. I’m always a sucker for mascara ads (even though they’re usually false eyelash and computer “enhanced”). Over the past year, I’ve caved to lash blasting images of Cover Girls Drew Barrymore and Rihanna. I mean…it never hurts to try, right?! My lashes definitely need it. With some of the drugstore mascaras I try, I’m pleasantly surprised with the outcome while others…leave something to be desired. Read on for reviews…and just maybe you’ll score a drugstore mascara find that’s right for you (or save the $10 that you would have otherwise spent on it!).

Cover Girl Lash Blast
Lash Blast has been a personal favourite in my make-up stash since its release last year. The stiff comb-like super wand helps me distribute the mascara to all my lashes—even those tiny baby eyelashes–and these lashes especially need all the help they can get! I’m convinced the large comb-like brush coupled with the over-sized tube actually works better than the usual fibre wand to maximize product distribution from the tube to my lashes. At only about $10CDN ($8 when on sale!), this mascara is a great deal and definitely comparable to higher end (and higher priced) mascaras.

Cover Girl Exact Eyelights Eye-Brightening Mascara
I love the idea, but I’m pretty skeptical when it comes to mascaras that are supposed to be ‘highlighting’, so of course I had to try it out for myself. I wanted to believe the marketing hype with this mascara, but found that it fell short of what it promised. I scooped up Eyelighting in Black Sapphire, the recommended choice for brown eyes. Once applied, I found the Eyelighting mascara to be no different than any other black mascara. The wand is similar to the one found in Lash Blast, which works well with my lashes and saves this mascara from being a total waste! Overall, it’s a decent mascara, but I doubt I’d see a noticeable difference if I were to use the black mascara for blue eyes, the one for green eyes, etc.!

Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express
I love when my lashes are big and bold, so Colossal? Bring it on! The cross-over multiple fibres of the brush worked well to build up product on my lashes, but actually distributed too much for my liking – weighing my lashes down and undoing the usual eyelash curler lift. The colossal-sized brush also made it difficult to get at the inner and outer corners of the lash line, without the mascara smudging on my skin. As I do prefer the look of volumized lashes, I found it tough to build up coats without looking clumpy (I blame the wand!). The final result were lashes with length, but I would hardly give them the attribute “ colossal”. All in all, a decent mascara, but I likely wouldn’t purchase it again for my own personal use.

Maybelline Lash Stiletto
Lash Stiletto claims to do what for your lashes what it does for your legs – and who doesn’t know the power of the tall heel? Lengthening usually isn’t what I look for in a mascara, but I was pleasantly surprised with the results from Lash Stiletto. The tapered brush (shaped like a tall heel) works brilliantly to build up mascara on the lashes, without being clumpy. The finished result lengthens and adds volume to the lashes. The skinnier end of the brush helps you really define the inner and outer corners of the lash line, where the hairs tend to be short and fine. I love the sleek packaging! Relative to the two ‘big’ mascaras mentioned previously, the Lash Stiletto tube is more compact in size allowing me to squeeze more items into the daily make-up kit I throw into my purse.

L’oreal Beauty Tubes Mascara
Back in early December, I was given a sneak preview of the then soon-to-be released Beauty Tubes Mascara. L’oreal’s latest mascara aims to take your lashes to new heights with a microfibre primer plus mascara product, all in one tube. Once applied, I did notice my lashes were longer with the microfibre extensions at the tips. The mascara works great as a lengthening mascara; I’d recommend it for those (blessed) beauties with already full lashes that just need eparating and lengthening power in their mascara. ARTIST TIP | Winter Getaway? Beach Beauty.

Winter’s nearly over, but summer can’t come soon enough! For those planning a Reading Week/Spring Break retreat (or for those wanting to fast forward to warmer days but are stuck here at home), here are some tips for a low-maintenance beach-ready look to help heat it up!

1. peachy pink blush/highlighter
I love MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish in RedHead for achieving this part of the look. This highlighting powder comes in a spectrum of peachy pink. Its sheer but shimmery finish works beautifully to show off your tan in progress. Use a large powder brush to concentrate the application on the sides of the forehead, down the temples and atop the cheekbones. Now, just sit back and enjoy the sun…and you’ll be glistening in all the right places!

2. a coral lipgloss
Add some punch to your lips with a coral coloured lipgloss. Coral is a universally flattering shade that will add a gorgeous complement to your tanned tone. To get the look, I like to keep MAC’s Lipglass in Lychee Luxe (pictured above) handy.

3. clear mascara
Add some lift to your eyelashes by initially using an eyelash curler. Set the curl with a couple of light coats of clear mascara. You can very well use black (or any mascara colour of your choice), but just keep your plan to tan poolside, rather than in the water. Keep in mind that even “waterproof” formulas aren’t necessarily made to withstand prolonged time in the water! In other words, stick to clear mascara and you’re in the clear!

Lastly, don’t forget your sunblock. Enjoy!

RHIA ON MAKE-UP JUNKIE | Final Post and Review of American Beauty

Check out my final write-up for Make-up Junkie!!Fabulous Feel Liquid Colour glides on smoothly to give opaque colour with high shine. The formula is non-sticky and just like the name – feels quite fabulous on the lips! I test ran Amaretto, a pretty neutral pink-brown colour that works well on different skin tones. The colour stayed true for the most part, but I found a touch-up was required after about 3 hours. The one thing that took me a bit to get used to was the strong fragrance of the gloss. I like subtle scents to my glosses, but found this one initially overpowering. A minor setback, but the look and feel of this gloss is still a steal for $12 USD (approximately)!

Double Lush Mascara Plus Primer I’m not a usual fan of 2-step primer and mascara products, but I was pleasantly surprised by American Beauty’s version. I found the formula gave my lashes much needed volume, versus other 2-step mascaras I’ve tried in the past. I tried out the mascara in Black, but Double Lush is also available in Brown and Midnight, which is a first that I’ve seen for primer plus mascara products (usually they’re only available in Black). I love what Double Lush does for my lashes, and I’d definitely be willing to shell out the $12 US that this mascara retails for.

Ultra-Easy Automatic Eyeliner (Auburn) The simple twist-up and no-sharpen action of this eyeliner definitely makes it ultra-easy. I had the chance to try out Auburn, a gorgeous maroon brown with faint shimmer that looks particularly lovely on blue-eyed ladies. The creamy eyeliner glided on smoothly and lasted well throughout the day to keep my eyes defined (minor midday touch-up was required though!). This eyeliner is perfect for the no-fuss make-up junkie – no need for sharpening – just roll up and apply as desired!

Pretty Bronze Bronzing Powder (High Summer) Get that coveted bronze goddess look with American Beauty’s Bronzer months ahead of the summer season! The sheer tan brown powder accentuated with flecks of gold sparkle. With just a couple of swipes, you can instantly revive that glow and say goodbye to blah winter-skin (all my Canadians are saying amen right now!). The sheer consistency of the powder makes it very user-friendly to work with – it builds and blends well for a more of a natural appearing non-streaky glow. Dust some of the powder along the collarbones or atop the décolletage for the piece de resistance!

Be sure to check out Make-up Junkie for all the latest, greatest (and not so great) in beauty products!

PRODUCT REVIEW | L’oreal’s Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara

I was contacted a few weeks back by the marketing masters at Matchstick to review the newly released L’oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara. Beauty Tubes Mascara is a 2-in-1 primer plus mascara formula that aims to take your lashes to new heights! You’ve probably seen some commercials (featuring the gorgeous Linda Evangelista) for the new mascara. I’ve been noticing it more in local drugstores recently since its release date in December 2008 (throughout Canadian stores).

Here’s how to use Beauty Tubes:

BEFORE: Sparse eyelashes

Step 1: After curling the eyelashes, use the nourishing micro-fibre primer on the one end of the tube to build up and extend the lashes. (You can see the lengthening magic working already!)
ARTIST TIP: I find using one base coat best so as not to weigh down the lashes.

Step 2: Use the mascara end of the tube to apply two coats of black mascara. Make sure the white primer coat is completely concealed.

The Result: Instant lash extensions!
ARTIST TIP: Have a lash fan handy to keep lashes separated.

The mascara does as it promises, giving great length to the lashes without smudging and flaking. My own lashes are pretty sparse, so the product unfortunately doesn’t provide what I look for in a mascara (i.e. volume!!). On a positive note, what I did love about Beauty Tubes is how super easy it was to remove – despite not budging all day! With some warm water, the mascara simply slid off and still in tube form!

The mascara reminds me of a long-time favourite Kiss Me Mascara, but at half the pricepoint. I have to admit that Kiss Me gives my lashes better volume though, so I’d likely skip the Beauty Tubes and save my money towards that. Overall, I would recommend L’oreal’s Beauty Tubes more for (those lucky) women with already full lashes that long for lengthening power in their mascara.

L’oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes retails for approximately $15 CAD and are currently available in local drug and grocery stores.

Are you loving L’oreal’s latest mascara? Let Matchstick and L’oreal know what you think!
